Meta Connect 2025: Did Ray-Ban Display glasses 'fail'? Watch what happened during live demo

The two-day event was supposed to highlight Meta's path-breaking push into wearable technology, but fate had other plans

The first day of the Meta Connect 2025 event on Wednesday was to be spectacular, with a range of wearables announced—from the Ray-Ban Display to the Oakley Vanguard.

However, technical glitches during the livestreamed event unexpectedly stole the show.

A cooking catastrophe

To demonstrate how useful the Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses could be in everyday life, Mark Zuckerberg connected food creator Jack Mancuso to the stage, who asked the glasses to help him make a Korean-inspired steak sauce.

However, the glasses' AI soon got muddled, sometimes skipping ahead with lines like "you’ve already combined the base ingredients, so now grate the pear".

The problem remained stubborn, despite Mancuso's attempts to correct it. He quickly blamed it on a WiFi glitch.

“The irony of the whole thing is you spend years making technology and then the WiFi at the day catches you," joked an embarrassed Zuckerberg. The audience laughed in response, avoiding further embarrassment for Meta.

Video call woes

The cooking incident was, unfortunately, not the last of Meta's problems during the livestream.

Later on, Zuckerberg attempted a live video call with Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth using the Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses—synced with the Meta Neural Band.

Sadly enough, the glasses remained stubborn here too, refusing to connect the call despite Zuckerberg's hand gestures.

"This WiFi is brutal," Bosworth quipped, in an attempt to save face and lighten the mood.

"You practice these things like 100 times, and then, you never know what’s going to happen.”

Other products launched at Meta Connect 2025

Although the $799 Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses—basically a mix of the existing Ray-Ban AI glasses and the Project Orion AR glasses, and enhanced with the accompanying electromyography (EMG) technology Neural Band—were at the centre of the event, there were a few other products too.

Oakley Vanguard glasses

Developed with EssilorLuxottica, the new Oakley Vanguard smart glasses feature a centre-mounted 12MP camera with 3K video recording and Oakley’s Sphaera curved lens design.

Other features include Oakley’s Three-Point Fit system, IP67-rated dust and water resistance, powerful open-ear speakers, a five-microphone array optimised to reduce wind noise, and up to 9 hours of battery life.

The glasses come at a starting price of $499.

Ray-Ban AI glasses (Version 2)

This updated version of the popular Ray-Ban AI glasses have new features like 8 hours of battery life, 3K Ultra HD video capture with HDR and up to 60fps, and fast charging built in.

The glasses, starting at $379, will be available in both classic and new frame styles, including Wayfarer, Skyler, and Headliner.

Meta, however, has not specified when these products will be released in India.
