Video calls on WhatsApp are about to get a lot more fun.

The app has introduced a feature that lets you swap your real-life background with an AI-generated one. All you need to do is type a simple prompt—“sunset by the beach”, “snowy mountains”, or even “your dream cafe”—and Meta’s AI will colour the scene behind you.

Suddenly, that routine work call or evening chat with friends becomes a little more imaginative; a little more personal.

In its official announcement on X, WhatsApp said that it had “added even more effects and filters for video calls, photos and videos”, and that users can now “imagine any background and bring it to life with Meta AI on WhatsApp".

This is part of a bigger effort to bring more creativity to the platform, so conversations not only connect people, but also spark joy along the way.

How to try it out

It is very simple. While you’re on a video call, tap the magic wand icon, head to “Backgrounds”, and either pick from ready-made designs, or create your own with the “Create with AI” button.

The tool will give you a few different options and you can keep refreshing until you find the one that feels right.

If you’re wondering about privacy, WhatsApp has clearly stated that end-to-end encryption still applies, which means your conversations stay as secure as ever.

Adding a personal touch to calls

This isn’t the first time WhatsApp has tried to make chats more vibrant.

Recent updates have included colourful themes, custom message bubbles and even AI writing help. Yet, the new background feature feels different because it adds a personal touch to something as ordinary as a call.

It’s a small way of lifting the mood, whether you’re checking in with family, catching up with friends, or sitting through yet another Monday meeting.

At a time when so much of our connection happens through screens, details like these matter.

A call framed by a dreamy forest, a buzzing city street or a peaceful mountain view may not solve the world’s problems, but it might just make your conversation feel a little warmer: that’s a change most of us could use.
