At least four people—including a train driver—died on Sunday and more than 100 others were injured after two passenger trains collided in southern Egypt's Giza.
Egyptian railway authorities said that the collision took place in the Gerza village of the Al-Ayyat district—between the stations of Kafr Ammar and Al-Raqqa—when a Giza-Fayoum train crashed into the back of another train, which was on its way from Cairo to Aswan, as per a Reuters report.
Emergency teams were rushed to the scene, and are working to remove debris from the crash and restore train traffic on the Cairo-Upper Egypt line.
Visuals from the scene showed people looking in shock at multiple overturned train carriages, with one completely off the tracks.
“72 ambulances participated in the transport and evacuation operations," the Egyptian Ministry of Health said in an initial statement, adding that the injured were being treated in three hospitals: the Al-Wasta Hospital, Al-Ayyat Hospital, and the Atfih Hospital.
