A day after unconfirmed reports suggested that Indian-flagged vessels would be allowed to cross the Strait of Hormuz, the Iran ambassador to India confirmed that Tehran is giving safe passage through the water body.
Pointing out that India and Iran share common interests in the region, Iranian ambassador Mohammad Fathali said, "Yes, because India is our friend. You will see it within two or three hours. We believe that Iran and India share common interests in the region."
"As ambassador in India, I say that the government of India in this situation, after the war, helped us in different fields," he added.
This confirmation comes a day after Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi said Tehran has permitted ships from some countries to transit the Strait of Hormuz.
"Some countries have already talked to us about passing the strait and we have cooperated with them," Takht-Ravanchi told AFP.
He also rubbished allegations about Iran laying mines in the Strait, saying it is closed during the war. "Not at all. This is not true," he said.
The minister said Iran will not let enemy countries use the Strait. "As far as Iran is concerned, we feel that those countries that joined the aggression should not benefit from safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz," he added.
