A 22-year-old man travelled from New Zealand to Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur and allegedly killed his stepfather on Saturday,

The victim, Navjot Singh, 35, was shot dead outside his car service centre in the Milkak Khanam area of Rampur.

Police arrested his wife’s son Avdeep Singh and her nephew Rajandeep Singh, 23, a taxi driver, in connection with the murder.

Nabjot was at his car service centre on Saturday evening when the assailants arrived in a grey Alto car. Two men got out of the vehicle. CCTV footage from the premises showed one ran into the service centre and shot Navjot and then dragged him outside.

The second man then shot him the back, causing the man to collapse before firing another shot.

Navjot got back up and went to the shop but collapsed again. The men then followed him inside and fired more shots before fleeing in their car.

He succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Police said that the trouble started in January after Navjot married Kamal Kaur, 49, a widow following the death of his first wife.

Kamal Kaur’s two songs Avdeep and Joganpreet, moved to New Zealand three years prior to their father's death. They were both allegedly opposed to their mother’s marriage.

ASP Anurag Singh said that the Avdeep arrived in India on September 22 and stayed at Rajdeep's house and hotels. The two planned the murder.

“We are questioning Avdeep and Rajandeep to ascertain the details of the case. As part of the investigation, we are also trying to establish when Avdeep came from New Zealand,” said Anurag Singh,

police lodged an FIR against eight persons, including the woman’s two sons and their relatives, at Milak Khanam police station based on the victim’s father's statement.

Navjot’s relatives said that a panchayat was earlier convened to resolve the dispute, as the brothers had also threatened Navjot in the past.

Navjot’s first wife had died by suicide by consuming a poisoned substance. He was arrested and sent to jail in connection with the death. He was released about a year and a half ago and opened a car service at  Kumhariya Kalan crossing.
