A court on Tuesday granted interim bail to 2020 Delhi riots accused Sharjeel Imam to attend the weddings of his two cousins between October 4 to 10. He has been chargesheeted under UAPA in an alleged larger conspiracy case.
The two cousins were identified as Danish Iman and Fahad Imam. One of the weddings is being held in New Delhi while the other is in Bihar's Sasaram. He should surrender before the jail authorities on the evening of October 10.
Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai of Delhi's Karkardooma court granted the bail on the condition of furnishing a bail bond of ₹50,000 and one surety in the like amount.
Imam is restricted from contacting any person or witness connected to the riots case. He is also not allowed to use social media or meet anyone outside the family.
On July 4, a Delhi court denied bail to Imam and co-accused Umar Khalid in the case related to a larger conspiracy behind the 2020 Delhi riots case.
Both of them had sought bail, saying they have been imprisoned without starting a trial, contending it violated their fundamental right to liberty.
At total of 53 people were killed and more than 700 injured in the violence erupted during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC).
