A new low-pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal, the Indian Meterological Department said.

The low-pressure system is set to cause gusty or squally winds and rough sea conditions along the coasts of West Bengal, Odisha and north coastal Andhra Pradesh.

The Meteorological Department forecast widespread rainfall over West Bengal, Odisha and lower parts of West Bengal & Sikkim during 22nd-28th August.

Odisha is currently under a red alert for extremely heavy rains and thunderstorms,

Meanwhile, an orange alert was issued for parts of north Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and East Uttar Pradesh.

The Andhra Pradesh government is on high alert for heavy rainfall this week. 

Home and Disaster Management Minister Vangalapudi Anitha has directed district administrations to remain alert and take all necessary precautionary measures.

IMD scientist Akhil Shrivastava said that good rainfall activity is likely across eastern India and adjoining central India regions. “Rainfall activity could be heavy to very heavy, under an Orange Alert, mainly in Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, east Madhya Pradesh and east Uttar Pradesh," he said.

The low pressure are is likely to move nearly north-westwards across North Odisha and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal during the next 24 hours, according to IMD.

The squally winds with speeds reaching upto 40-50 and 60 kmph are likely to gust over Northwest & adjoining west central Bay of Bengal and along & off West Bengal & adjoining Odisha & North Andhra Pradesh coasts till 24th August.

The sea conditions are likely to be rough over the north-west and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal and along and off West Bengal and adjoining Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh coasts till 24th August.

Fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea from 22 to 25th august from the Bay of Bengal and northern Andhra Pradesh coast.
