With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange alert for Mumbai on Thursday, residents have been warned to brace for heavy rainfall at isolated locations.
Thane, Raigad and Ratnagiri are likely to receive very heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours.
IMD has issued multiple weather alerts across Maharashtra, with heavy rainfall expected in several regions on July 23.
An orange alert has been issued for Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts, in the Konkan region.
In north Maharashtra, a yellow alert has been issued. Rain accompanied by thundershowers has been forecast for Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon and Nashik districts.
Meanwhile, an orange alert has been issued for Nashik Ghatmatha.
The IMD has issued a red alert for the Pune Ghatmatha sections and an orange alert for Satara's ghat areas on Thursday. Elsewhere in western Maharashtra, light to moderate rain is likely over Sangli, Ahilyanagar, and Kolhapur, while Solapur will experience scattered light rainfall.
In the Marathwada region, moderate rainfall is likely in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Hingoli districts. Jalna, Parbhani, Beed, and Nanded are expected to receive light to moderate showers, while Latur and Dharashiv are likely to receive only light rain.
The IMD has placed all 11 districts of the Vidarbha region—including Nagpur, Amravati, and Chandrapur—under a yellow alert, warning of widespread light-to-moderate rainfall.
In view of the IMD's red alert warning of extremely heavy rainfall, a holiday has been declared for all schools, colleges, and educational institutions across Palghar district on Thursday.
In Mumbai, however, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has clarified that educational institutions will remain open and no holiday has been announced.
