Activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, has approached the Delhi High Court seeking permission to shift him to a private medical facility of her choice, alleging that he has “lost faith” in the treatment being provided at Safdarjung Hospital.
In her petition, Angmo expressed “dire concern” over her husband’s health and alleged that despite repeated requests, Safdarjung Hospital authorities had shared only “selective information” about his medical condition.
She further accused the hospital of adopting a “clandestine and completely opaque” approach towards his medical treatment.
The petition also alleged that police forcibly removed the fasting activist from Jantar Mantar on Saturday by “taking colourable advantage” of the High Court’s direction, despite there being no medical emergency.
“There existed no medical emergency or other circumstance warranting such abrupt and coercive intervention. The forcible removal was neither medically necessitated nor legally justified and constitutes a manifest infringement of Shri Sonam Wangchuk's fundamental rights,” the petition stated.
Filed through advocates Bahuli Sharma, Susan Maria Mathew, Ridhi Arora, Suryaansh Kishan Razdan, and Yoshit Jain, the plea also alleged discrepancies between Wangchuk’s potassium levels recorded by Safdarjung Hospital and those reported by an independent agency.
“The mala fide conduct of the respondents is thus evident from the results,” the petition claimed.
Earlier on Wednesday, Angmo wrote on X that the health bulletin issued by Safdarjung Hospital had “conveniently omitted” the actual potassium level recorded for her husband.
She alleged that despite repeated requests, the hospital had refused to discharge Wangchuk or allow his transfer to a private facility of their choice.
“With around 30 police personnel stationed on our floor and well over 100 across the hospital, our movement is severely restricted. It is not medical care. It is illegal detention,” she said.
Wangchuk had been on an indefinite hunger strike for 20 days, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. He was taken to hospital by a Delhi Police team on Saturday morning after doctors warned that his prolonged fast had reached a critical stage.
He began his hunger strike at Jantar Mantar on June 28 as part of the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) agitation, which is seeking Pradhan’s resignation over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination.
