Roads in Kolkata are now flooded after heavy rains and storms this week. The waterlogging has disrupted traffic on the roads in many parts of the city.
The rain started on Friday morning. Parts of the city got light rain showers, while other places faced heavy rains, which eventually flooded roads.
Extensive waterlogging has been reported on the main roads connecting to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport and parts of Central Avenue, Amherst Street Square and Salt Lake Sector Five.
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has begun efforts to remove water using the pumping station and special vehicles from several flooded areas in the city.
A yellow alert was issued in 10 districts in the state, including in Kolkata.
The temperatures in the state have also dropped by 5 degrees Celsius, with the minimum temperature standing at 24.6 degrees Celsius on Friday. However, humidity has stayed.
The rain has also caused landslides in some areas.
There were reports of landslides on National Highway No.110 near the Mahanti in Kurseong. Smaller landslides were reported near the hills in several places.
Meanwhile, the Balasan River has overflowed, and a temporary bridge collapsed in Dudiya in Kurseong. The main bridge, which is under construction, has also been damaged in Dudiya.
The administration has asked people to use alternate routes.
The sky has been overcast in Southern Bengal since Friday morning.
The Indian Meteorology Department has predicted that the rains and thunderstorms may stay till next Tuesday, with heavy rains on both Saturday and Sunday.
The light to moderate rains will be accompanied by wind speeds of 30 to 50 kmph.
The meteorological department also warned of flooding in low-lying areas.
Heavy rains are predicted in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri. Parts of Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri are set to receive more than 20 cm of rainfall.
Thunderstorms and lightning can be expected in East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad and Nadi. Heavy rain can also be expected in Hoogly, Purulia, Bankura and North 24 Parganas.
Heavy to very heavy rains are set to fall in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar and Uttar Dinajpur.
Meteorologists say that the conditions for rain were created in Bengal due to water vapour from the Bay of Bengal.
