The police have revealed the details behind the shocking murder of 25-year-old para -athlete Chirag Tyagi in Ghaziabad. Tyagi, a 400-metre champion in the recent Indian Open Para Athletics International Championship, was found dead with a bullet injury at Sai Upvan in the Kotwali Police Station area on Saturday.
Police said the accused is Yash Khatik, another Paralympic athlete, who also confessed to the crime. Dhawal Jaiswal, DCP City, told reporters, "Prima facie, the case appears to be a murder. CCTV footage showed a suspect who was detained and questioned. He confessed to the murder. The accused has been identified as Yash Khatik."
Officials call it a revenge murder, stating that Khatik committed the murder in retaliation for the cancellation of his qualification due to a document verification complaint. During interrogation, Khatik revealed that he previously practiced with Chirag Tyagi and both participated in athletics under the blind category.
Khatil claimed that Tyagi had filed a complaint against him regarding his documents, which resulted in his qualification being cancelled. Khatik was reportedly upset about this and wanted to take revenge. Police said that teams have been deployed to recover the weapon used in the murder. They are also investigating whether any other individuals were involved in the incident.
Tyagi, a resident of Sathli village in Modinagar, lived in the hostel at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium SAI Centre in Delhi and had left for his home to celebrate his qualification for the Asian Para Games following his gold medal win at the championship. CCTV visuals revealed he left the hostel at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium SAI Centre in Delhi around 9:12 a.m. Though it is unclear as to when he reached Ghaziabad, passersby discovered his body in the Sai Upvan forest around 12:30 am on Saturday.
His mobile phone was ringing. A passerby answered the call, and Chirag's girlfriend was on the other end. He informed her of the incident, following which the police were informed. He had injuries on his body and face, and some reports claim he was also stabbed in the back with a needle and electrocuted.
Examination of CCTV visuals pointed at Khatik, who was immediately arrested.
