The main accused in the stabbing of 17-year-old Surya Pratap Chauhan, Asad, was shot dead in a late-night police encounter on Saturday. He sustained gunshot injuries during retaliatory firing in a joint operation by the Khoda and Indirpuram police teams.

He was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead.

According to police, Assad and his aides had stabbed Surya to death on May 28, the day of Bakrid.

The killing had sparked outrage in Ghaziabad. Family members of the victim and several Hindu organisations are staging protests and demanding the immediate arrest and encounter of the alleged accused.

Asad carried a reward of Rs 50,000 on his arrest.

Police officials said that the encounter occurred after Assad planned to meet associates in the Khoda police station area. They were intercepted, following which the encounter took place.

Police teams had already set up checkpoints and conducted raids in the areas.

DCP Dhawal Jaiswal said, Today, the police team received information that Asad was going to meet some of his friends in the Khoda police station area and was planning to escape after taking some money from them. Based on this information, the entire team combed the entire area and set up checkpoints. In this sequence, Asad and one of his friends arrive here on a bike. The police team attempts to stop them and warn them, but instead of stopping, they open fire on the police team. In the retaliatory fire, the police fire in self-defence, in which Asad is shot.”

“Asad is immediately taken to the hospital for treatment. During this exchange of fire, one of our constables was also injured and has been taken to the hospital... Asad's bike has been recovered, and the pistol he used to fire has also been recovered. The police are conducting a thorough investigation of the entire incident and taking further legal action," he added.

The police added that Asad died of injuries in the hospital. The constable who was injured in the fire is also undergoing treatment.

Surya Pratap was a class 11 student at a private school and a resident of Navneet Vihar in Khoda colony. He was attacked near Sharma Daily.

His older brother, Yash, told police that he was attacked by Assad with the intent to kill.

Vicky, his fired, told police that Surya was invited earlier in the day by a youth in the neighbourhood.
