The transition of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay from a cinematic titan to the executive head of Tamil Nadu in May 2026 represents a masterclass in disrupting the existing old order in the state. Vijay’s new attire has not just redefined the aesthetics of governance, but has brought in a new fashion trend in the Dravidian land.
Dressed in a meticulously crafted matte-black suit designed by Zafir Ahmed, Vijay signalled a clean break from established political protocols, right from the day of his swearing-in. The choice of sharp, modern silhouettes and a monochrome palette was intentional. By channelling his action hero persona from the film Beast—where he portrayed a lean, high-functioning operative—Vijay has repositioned himself as an action administrator. And his repositioning and the clean formal look is everywhere online, making the clothing stores cash in on the craze.

A popular retail store in Tamil Nadu has come up with a new style called “CM Vijay Look”. Priced at Rs 3,999, the CM Vijay Look is a combo of a black blazer, white shirt and a black trouser. If the readymade set doesn’t suit the requirement, the store also gives an option to buy a pant bit piece and a shirt separately, which can be stitched.
Their flyer with Vijay’s image in the centre and the details of the suit has gone viral on social media.
In the 234-member House, 118 is the simple majority mark. Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, leaving Dravidian heavyweights DMK and AIADMK behind.
However, since it was short of the majority mark, TVK sought support from the Congress (5 seats) and the CPI, CPI (M), VCK and IUML with two MLAs each. After days of hectic parleying, Vijay finally managed to shore up the numbers.
The TVK government finally crossed a major political hurdle on May 13, with Vijay comfortably winning the trust vote in the state assembly by 144 votes in favour and 22 against, amid a DMK walkout and a divided AIADMK, whose 25 rebel MLAs backed the actor-politician.
