The Assembly election results not only threw MK Stalin-led DMK out of power in Tamil Nadu but also shook its core after many senior ministers, including MK Stalin himself, lost the elections to actor Vijay’s TVK candidates.
Among the remaining 32 ministers who contested, 15 ministers were defeated.
While Stalin lost the Kolathur seat to former DMK MLA and TVK leader V S Babu, many senior leaders too tasted defeat. They include DMK General Secretary and one of the senior ministers Durai Murugan (Katpadi), M. Subramanian (Saidapettai), P.T.R. Palanivel Thiagarajan (Madurai Madhi), Anbil Mahesh Poyyamoshi (Thiruverumpur), T.R.P Raja (Mannargudi), S.M. Nassar (Avadi), T.M.O. Anparasan (Alandur), Moorthy (Madurai East), Geetha Jeevan (Thoothukudi), Muthusamy (Erode West), Mathiventhan (Rasipuram), R. Rajendran (Salem North), M.P. Saminathan (Kangeyam), Gandhi (Ranipettai) and Periyakaruppan (Thirupattur). Speaker Appavu (Radhapuram) too suffered defeat.
Duraimurugan was relegated to third place in Katpadi, where TVK candidate Sudhakar won. In Saidapettai, M. Subramanian was defeated by TVK candidate Arul Prakasam by a margin of over 28,000 votes.
Anbil Mahesh Poyyamoshi tasted defeat in Thiruverumpur at the hands of Vijayakumar Alias Navalpattu S Viji of TVK, who won by a margin of about 8,700 votes.
TRB Raja, who was the Tamil Nadu Industries Minister, lost to Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) candidate Kamaraj S at Mannargudi constituency with a margin of 1,566 votes on Monday. Rajaa secured 66,850 votes while Kamaraj got 68,416 votes.
Minister S.M. Nassar also faced defeat in Avadi constituency at the hands of TVK’s R Ramesh Kumar. Tourism Minister R. Rajendran lost in Salem North constituency against TVK candidate Sivasakumar, who won by a margin of about 14,000 votes.
In Madurai Madhi, where P.T.R. Palanivel Thiagarajan locked horns against director and actor Sundar C, the unexpected winner was TVK’s Madhar Madharudeen, who won by a margin of 19,000 votes.
Minister S. Muthusamy lost in Erode West constituency against TVK candidate Anand Mohan, who won by a margin of 22,000 votes, while Welfare Minister Mathiventhan lost in the Rasipuram (separate) constituency in Namakkal district to TVK’s Lokesh Tamil Selvan.
Geetha Jeevan also lost in Thoothukudi to actor Srinath (TVK), who won by a margin of over 37,000 votes.

In Alandur, where T.M. Anparasan contested, TVK’s M Harish sailed through. Minister K.R. Periyakaruppan lost by just 1 vote after a tight contest with TVK candidate Sreenivasa Sethupathi took over him.
In Ranipett, Thahira of TVK secured an easy victory over DMK minister Dandhi. Minister Murthy lost in the Madurai East constituency against TVK candidate Karthikeyan, who won by more than one lakh votes.
Tamil Development and Information Minister O.P. Saminathan lost in the Kangeyam constituency. AIADMK candidate N.S.N. Natarajan won by a huge margin.
