South 24 Parganas has been a politically significant region as far as West Bengal politics is concerned. When the winds of change were blowing across the state towards the end of the Left rule, South 24 Parganas was among the first to signal the shift, going the Trinamool Congress way as early as in 2008, in the panchayat elections.

With TMC MP and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee leading the way in Diamond Harbour, all seven assembly seats in the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha (Parliamentary) seat, along with the rest of the 24 seats have been TMC’s strongholds over the years.

Here’s a look at how the 30 assembly seats in the South 24 Parganas are doing as per the latest trends as counting of votes progresses. The results for the Falta constituency will not be declared today as the Election Commission has ordered repolling in all 285 polling booths on May 21 due to electoral malpractices, with the results scheduled for May 24.
