A 19-year-old has been arrested for the rape and murder of an IRS officer's daughter in Delhi, police said. The victim, 22, was alone at her house when the incident happened.

An IIT graduate and an accomplished dancer who had won several accolades, the young woman was strangled to death using the cable of a phone charger after being sexually assaulted by the accused, identified as Alwar native Rahul. The teenager was picked up by the Delhi Police from a hotel in Dwarka, where he was hiding after committing the crime.

The accused was identified by the police after he was caught on CCTV cameras. It is believed that he never returned the spare key that was handed during his time at the house and used it to gain entry, NDTV said in a report. This theory was strengthened by the fact that there were no signs of forced entry at the crime scene.

Financial deals cost accused his job

Rahul was relieved of his duties after it was found that he often borrowed money from other domestic helps in the area. He was reportedly addicted to online gaming and spent the money on it. Since he never repaid any of these debts, it became a matter of concern, and he lost his job about a month ago, the NDTV report said.

In the course of the investigation, the police also found that the teenager had committed sexual offences in his home town as well. He reached Delhi only a day before the crime was commited. He is currently facing charges of rape, murder, and robbery.

According to the police, while it is possible that he held a grudge against the victim's household for firing him, the motive for the murder can only be confirmed after thorough interrogation.

The victim is survived by her father, who is a senior bureaucrat, her mother, who is a doctor, and an elder brother, who reportedly holds a senior role at an MNC.
