Anti-CEC protests are sweeping the country, with Delhi emerging as the main flashpoint as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi leads the INDIA bloc demonstration demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
An FIR was registered by Delhi Police against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi for allegedly assaulting police personnel and obstructing government work during their protest. The case was registered in connection with the incidents that took place during the protest on Wednesday.
Besides several Congress leaders, the FIR has been filed against party workers who took part in the protest. A total of 91 people were detained during the protest, including multiple MPs and leaders.
In the wake of major protests in Delhi, security arrangements have been tightened. Police have barricaded access roads around Sansad Marg, the Election Commission office, and Jantar Mantar.
Also, Delhi Police are examining mobile phone footage to identify protesters who allegedly manhandled and assaulted police personnel, including women officers, during a Congress demonstration near Jantar Mantar.
Police were examining the allegations and the role of those involved in connection with the "assault" of the cops.
Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday vowed he would continue with the protests against CEC Gyanesh Kumar till he resigns.
The protesters were stopped midway as they travelled by bus for a surprise sit-in at Jantar Mantar following a lunch meeting at a South Indian restaurant on Janpath, triggering an intense face-off with police.
Priyanka Gandhi and other women leaders lay flat on the road, clutching copies of the Constitution, until they were forcibly removed and loaded into police buses amid loud slogans from opposition members demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation.
MPs of the Congress, TMC, CPI-M, CPI, RJD, IUML and some other parties were among the protesters.
