A 37-year-old man was found dead with a bullet injury on the right side of his head inside his flat at Nabagram in the Narendrapur area on Sunday night.
The deceased has now been identified as Arup Mondal, a building material businessman. The police probe began with an investigation into whether he was murdered or died by suicide.
However, the man's family alleged foul play.
Sankar Naskar, the victim's maternal uncle, said that Mondal was left-handed, raising suspicion on the possibility of his death being caused by suicide, as the gunshot was on the right side of his head.
Family members were alerted to a disturbance at the flat on Monday morning by an acquaintance. Cops who reached the scene found the victim’s body in a pool of blood.
Police seized two firearms and six rounds of ammunition from the residence beside the body. Mondal used to live alone. The flat was also locked from the inside when the body was found, complicating the case further.
Cops are now questioning Modal's girlfriend, identified as Priyanka and one of her associates, Raju.
Swarup Mondal, the victim’s younger brother, said that this was a planned murder linked to a monetary dispute.
He alleged that the woman who was associated with Mondal had called her friend over to the flat and orchestrated the killing over finances.
A local businessman said that the victim had associations with multiple women and allegedly had connections with betting and gambling circles.
According to the woman who was arrested, Mondal allegedly borrowed Rs 30 lakh from her. She claimed that whenever she would demand repayment, he would threaten to commit suicide and implicate her.
Another relative of the deceased, Lakshan Naskar, says that Mondal was not someone who would kill himself. He said that the man was a strong-willed and fighting-minded individual .
Naskar also said that there would be evidence that the woman received money from Mondal. He said that a delay in the payment would have led to the incident.
Police said that they are conducting a further probe to determine the sequence of events.
