Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee landed in trouble in Parliament and has been suspended by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday after a complaint by Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar.
The resolution to suspend Kalyan for the Monsoon Session of Parliament was passed by the lower house of Parliament for using unparliamentary language against a woman member. The Serampore MP arrived in Parliament around noon and reportedly made derogatory comments, which prompted Dastidar to file a complaint to the speaker.
Thanking the speaker for his swift action, Dastidar said, “He (Banerjee) disrespects us outside; he uses unparliamentary language. Today, too, I protested against the language used and filed a complaint to the honourable speaker, which is why he took this decision. Kalyan Banerjee is suspended for the rest of the session.”
Dastidar was part of the 20 rebel TMC MPs who switched sides and merged their faction with the NCPI in June. A senior politician with the TMC for several years, she was a close aide of Mamata.
Kalyan, who has been suspended until August 13, belongs to the Mamata Banerjee faction of the TMC. However, he was involved in a heated argument with Mamata during the Martyr’s Day programme on July 21. Kalyan, reportedly, was upset and did not wait for the speeches by Abhishek Banerjee or Mamata. The TMC MP was speaking on the stage for around 20 minutes and stopped momentarily when Abhishek and later Mamata arrived on stage. Mamata, reportedly, told Kalyan that his speech was more than an hour and other speakers had to speak as well. Kalyan responded saying a leader should be shown the courtesy to finish his speech.
“When I was getting off the podium, Didi (Mamata) said something disrespectful. It has been over an hour,” said Kalyan in Delhi on Wednesday, saying that the former CM was looking at her watch while speaking. Kalyan also said that he does not know who whispered into Mamata’s ears, as Abhishek and another leader, Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, were sitting next to her.
“I love Didi, I respect Didi, I am ready to do everything for Didi. But Didi also has to be reasonable. Didi cannot be so troubled,” added Kalyan, saying that everything Mamata says is not acceptable.
Kalyan said the TMC supporters told him that Mamata should hit the streets, to infuse courage into the party workers. “What is Abhishek Banerjee doing? Just going from his house to Kalighat (Mamata’s house) is not enough. He has to step out even if he has to face eggs, lathis, or abuses. This is part of politics. Sitting at home won’t do,” he added.
Kalyan said that even today, the people of Bengal want Mamata and are watching her. He added that he is standing beside her but put a word of caution though – she has to understand reality, else the party she created will crumble in her hands.
