There has been extensive preparation from the ruling party and the Opposition as the parliament is expected to debate a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla on Monday.
The notice submitted by the Opposition to remove the speaker from his position was listed as part of the first day’s proceedings.
According to provisions from the Article regarding the removal of a speaker in the constitution, the Lok Sabha can pass a resolution with a majority of its membership.
The notice must be given at least 14 days in advance.
If the motion is called and about 50 members of the House stand at the chair’s calls, the notice will be adopted for discussion and voting.
However, if a minimum of 50 members do not stand for the notice, the motion will not be introduced.
The motion was supported by around 118 MPs from the India bloc. The opposition accused Birla of Blatant partisanship and siding with the ruling party and silencing the opposition.
Both the BJP and the Congress have issued whips to their Lok Sabha members to be present in the house during the consideration of the issue.
The Ruling government makes up a large majority of the house, which makes the outcome almost certain to be defeated.
The TMC initially showed hesitation in supporting the motion; however, they confirmed that the MPs will show support.
Congress MP Mallu Ravi defended the opposition's decision to defend the motion, saying, “Whenever there are controversial bills, the Speaker is taking the stand of the ruling party as if he were active in politics. Our parliamentary democracy stands strong when we allow the opposition to express their views.”
