Pakistan is set to deport Punjabi woman Sarabjeet Kaur who went on a pilgrimage to Nankana Sahib in November. She converted to Islam, got married to a local Muslim man and did not return to India.
Kaur left for Pakistan with the Sikh Jatha to mark the occasion of Guru Nanak's birth anniversary. However, she abandoned the group and left with a Pakistani man with whom she was allegedly in contact for years.
Who is Sarabjeet Kaur?
Sarabjeet Kaur, 52, is a resident of Kapurthala, Punjab. She converted to Islam and changed her name to Noor Hussain.
Her Pakistani husband was identified as Nasir Hussain, who is based in Farooqabad, Sheikhpura district, in the Pakistani province of Punjab.
"Kaur contracted marriage with Nasir Hussain of Sheikhupura district, some 50 kms from Lahore, a day after her arrival in Pakistan on November 4 and declared that she converted to Islam and married out of free will," PTI quoted a Pakistan police official as saying.
On November 18, the newly married couple moved the Lahore high court, alleging the police were forcing them to end their marriage and illegally raided their home in Farooqabad.
Kaur claimed that converted to Islam willingly and contacted the Indian mission to get Pakistani citizenship. "I love Nasir and have known him for the past nine years. I am currently divorced and willingly marrying him," she said in a video that went viral on social media.
