The rising temperatures have been observed in several other districts in the state, including Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Salem, Thirupattur, and Tiruallur.
About 17 districts across Tamil Nadu will experience heavy rains triggered by the formation of a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal today. The city, along with 10 districts including Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, and Thanjavur, will see light rainfall till Friday.
Towards the end of the week, the weather may become unstable. Cloudy and rainy weather is to be expected, IMD warned.
Holidays have been declared in schools and colleges in the 17 districts. In the remaining districts, schools alone have been declared closed. University exams have also been postponed. The continuous downpour has also caused waterlogging in Puducherry and Karaikal, which has disrupted daily life, prompting authorities to close schools and colleges in the area.
On Monday, districts Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai can expect heavy rainfall.
The rains are caused by a lower-level atmospheric circulation over the South Arabian Desert. The low-pressure area formed over the Malacca Strait and the adjoining South Andaman Sea on Saturday and intensified into a deep depression on Sunday morning.
The IMD predicts that the system may strengthen further and develop into a cyclonic storm, Seynar (meaning lion), over the Bay of Bengal by Wednesday. The name was suggested by the United Arab Emirates.
