A powerful explosion rocked Delhi on Monday evening, as a car exploded into flames outside the Red Fort Metro station. As per reports, at least eight people are feared dead in the high-intensity blast.

According to reports, the blast occurred around 7pm outside Red Fort metro station and 15 injured persons were immediately rushed to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital. Hospital authorities said eight people died on the way to the hospital, and the health condition of three people is critical.

According to the Delhi Fire Department, the situation has been contained and cooling operations are underway in the area. Police sounded a high alert in Delhi, and they cordoned off the area.

An eyewitness said he tripped and fell down in the intensity of the blast. "The blast occurred in a car parked near the Red Fort metro station gate number 1. The intensity was quite high. Injuries are feared," said a senior official of the Delhi Fire Service.

"I was at the gurdwara when I heard a strong sound. We couldn't make out what it was; it was that loud, said an eyewitness. A number of vehicles nearby were completely damaged," said another eyewitness.

The blast occurred after security forces from Jammu and Kashmir foiled a major terror module in Faridabad. Security was beefed up in the national capital following the recovery of around 360 kilos of suspected ammonium nitrate and a cache of arms and ammunition in Haryana's Faridabad. Police have enhanced surveillance at all border points connecting Delhi with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Security has been stepped up in sensitive zones such as railway stations, and metro premises.
