Central Committee Member (CCM) of the outlawed CPI (Maoist), Modem Balakrishna, who carries a bounty of Rs 1 crore, was among the 10 killed by Chhattisgarh security forces in an encounter in Gariaband district on Thursday. According to top officials, the anti-Naxal operation is continuing in the region.
According to Chhattisgarh police, the Naxalites were killed during an anti-Maoist operation in forest areas under Mainpur police station. Raipur Range Inspector General of Police Amresh Mishra confirmed the death of Modem Balakrishna and said security forces launched anti-Naxal operation in the region based on intelligence inputs on Maoist presence in Mainpur.

"Ten Naxalites, including senior cadres, have been gunned down so far," Mishra said. According to police, intense exchange of fire is continuing in the region.
Personnel belonging to Chhattisgarh police's Special Task Force, an elite unit of the Central Reserve Police Force, and a special unit of Gariaband district police were involved in the operation.
Modem Balakrishna, also known as Balanna, Ramachander and Bhaskar, was the secretary of the Odisha State Committee (OSC) and had joined the Naxal movement in early 1980s.

According to authorities, with the killing of 10 Naxals on Thursday, 241 Naxalites have so far been killed in separate encounters in Chhattisgarh this year. These deceased Naxals included Chalpathi alias Jairam, a member of the central committee and Odisha state committee of Maoists.
In January this year, 16 Naxalites were killed in an encounter with security forces in the same Mainpur area of Gariaband. The Bharatiya Janata Party government in the Centre and the state have intensified action against Naxalism. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has vowed to eliminate Naxalism by 2026.
