Heavy rainfall has triggered extreme flood-like conditions in Jammu on Tuesday. The water in the Tawi River has reached close to the danger level. The Doda district was the most affected. Visuals from the area show severe flooding and damage.

Visuals from the region showed a huge crowd of locals rescuing a group of buffaloes from drowning in the Tawi River. They had to pull the buffalo up using ropes.

In Bhalesa, a landslide occurred, bringing down a massive amount of sludge and mud. The Tawi River crossed the 20-foot danger mark in Udhampur.

Many low-lying areas were submerged due to the moderate to heavy rainfalls. A flood alert has been sounded, according to Jammu DIG Shiv Kumar Sharma. The administration has also asked locals to avoid going near the rivers. There is also a possibility of cloudbursts, flashfloods and landslides till August 27.

Earlier, a red alert was issued in the areas of Poonch, Mirpur, Rajouri, Kulgam, Reasi, Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Kishtwar, Udhampur, Ramban, and Doda.

Officials said that the traffic on the 250-km Jammu Srinagar national highway was suspended as a precautionary measure on Tuesday.

The Jammu railway station was entirely inundated due to the flood waters. In Doda, a girl died after a house collapsed. At least four people have been reported to be dead. A part of the NH 244 between Thathri and Prem Nagar has also been washed away by floodwaters.

Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, who spoke to Kashmir News Observer the water levels in the rivers have risen due to continuous rainfall for the past one week. He also asked people to stay away from low-lying areas. “The water level will recede again once the rainfall stops,” he added.

Kathua recorded the highest rainfall at 155.6 mm in the past 24 hours, followed by Bhaderwah (99.8) and Jammu (81.5), and Katra (68.8).
