While Prime Minister Narendra Modi was expected to visit China later this month to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, he will first visit Japan ahead of the much-anticipated Chinese trip.
The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a two-nation tour from August 29. Modi will be in Japan on a two-day visit in the first leg of his trip. From Japan, he will travel to China, primarily to attend the annual SCO Summit.
"At the invitation of the Prime Minister of Japan, H.E. Shigeru Ishiba, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will visit Japan from 29-30 August 2025 to participate in the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit. This will be Prime Minister Modi’s eighth visit to Japan, and the first Summit with Prime Minister Ishiba," it said.
The two prime ministers will review the strategic partnership between India and Japan. "The two prime ministers will review the special strategic and global partnership between India and Japan, including defence and security, trade and economy, technology and innovation, and people-to-people exchanges, as well as discuss issues of regional and global importance," MEA stated. "The visit will reaffirm the longstanding special bond of friendship between the two countries," the ministry added.

During his visit to China, Modi will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, China. "On the sidelines of the Summit, the prime minister is expected to hold bilateral meetings with several leaders attending the Summit," it said. Modi will be visiting China from August 30 to September 1.
Modi's Chinese visit comes following Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's recent trip to India and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's visit to Russia.
