Delhi Police have arrested a man in connection with the attack on Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a 'Jan Sunwai' programme at her official residence in Civil Lines on Thursday morning.

According to reports, the accused has been identified as Rakesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Saakiya, 35, a resident of Rajkot, Gujarat.

The BJP alleged that the man, posing as a complainant, first gave the CM some papers during the public hearing and then attacked her. The security personnel present at the venue immediately rushed to the spot and apprehended the attacker.

Officials said the attack was pre-planned.

The Delhi Police have contacted their Gujarat counterparts to verify his background and uncover any potential motives or political affiliations.

Saakiya’s mother, Bhanu, told investigating officials that her son was a “dog lover” and that he had been upset over the recent Supreme Court order, directing authorities to shift all stray dogs in Delhi to shelter homes.

Police, however, have launched a detailed investigation into the incident and tightened the security of the CM House.

The chief minister was taken to a hospital, though she sustained no major injuries.

The Jan Sunwai, a forum where the public can voice their grievances directly to the CM, has been temporarily suspended following the incident.

Details awaited
