Heavy showers continued in Mumbai on Tuesday morning, leaving many parts of the city, including Dadar, Matunga, Sion, Andheri, Parel, some areas of Byculla, Kalachowki, Thane, Ghatkopar, Vidyavihar, Vikhroli, and Bhandup, underwater. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and its surrounding areas.

The incessant rains have thrown traffic off gear. Many vehicles are stranded in roads, creating huge traffic bottlenecks, including in Atal Sethu and Bandra Khar Link Road. The Eastern Express Highway and Western Highway, especially in the Vile Parle area, are partially submerged, while the Andheri Subway is also under water. Authorities are diverting traffic from Thackeray and Gokhale bridges while areas like Gandhi Market, Vakola Bridge, Khar Subway, and Lokhandwala Complex in Sion are inundated.

IMD prediction

The IMD predicts heavy rains accompanied by winds upto 55 km per hour speed in Mumbai. There is also a tide warning in the city, worsening the situation in Mumbai for the next few hours as a combination of heavy rains and high tides can hinder the flow of water from low-lying areas of the city to the sea.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has declared a holiday today for all private offices and establishments falling under its jurisdiction, with the exception of essential and emergency services following the red alert.

Not just Mumbai, the suburbs of Vikhroli, Byculla, Juhu, and Bandra continued to receive heavy rainfall.

Trains, flights disrupted

Local train services have also been disrupted. Passengers are facing major problems, especially as local trains on the Central Railway and Harbour Railway lines are running late. Water accumulation on the railway tracks in many places has slowed down traffic.

Alert for 4 districts, including Mumbai

Not just Mumbai city, three other districts are also witnessing heavy downpour. They include Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri. Waterlogging has been reported in Thane’s Diva Daighur, Kopri and Yeur areas. The IMD has warned of heavy showers in Konkan and some parts of Madhya Maharashtra for the next few days.

The intensity of the rains is higher in the suburbs, and according to the information given by the Indian  Meteorological Department (IMD), more than 200 mm of rainfall has been recorded in many parts. Out of this, Vikhroli has received the highest rainfall of 255.5 mm.

The situation is serious in the suburbs of Thane and Kalyan-Dombivli, with water reaching waist level in many areas.

The IMD has warned of heavy rainfall for Mumbai, Konkan, and some parts of Madhya Maharashtra for the next few days. As there is a possibility of high tide in the sea, there is a possibility of water accumulation in low-lying areas.
