India Post has debunked reports claiming that the 50-year-old registered post system was being discontinued. Many social media users made posts that said that the old service was going to end on September 1.
A fact check issued on X by the Department of Posts said that it “rationalised its sorting infrastructure and unified the processing of both Registered and Speed post items”

India Post has upgraded the service by merging it with Speed Post. Here’s what that means for you. 👇
The services have been merged to enhance and streamline operations to build a more efficient and modern postal network.
The post said “Now, send Registered Post with the speed of Speed Post — no compromise on trust, just quicker outcomes,” and “We’re modernising, not erasing. “
The official PIB Fact check also dismissed the rumours, stating that registered post will continue. An official statement said that Registered post and Speed post are both accountable services, meaning that records are kept at each stage of transmission.

The difference lies in their delivery methods. While Registered Post is addressee-specific (delivered only to the addressee or their authorised representative), Speed Post is address-specific (delivered to any person available at the address).
After the integration, Speed Post and Speed Post parcel will provide address-specific delivery, and items booked as Speed Post with registration will be delivered specifically to the addressee.
The notice also said that customers will be able to access premium speed post features like:
-End-to-end online tracking
-Real-time delivery updates
-OTP-based secure delivery
-Cash on Delivery (COD) services
-Credit facility
-Applicable volume-based discount which caters to frequent users
-National Account Facility for the corporate customers
