Ram Arasiddi, Koppal SP said, “Based on a tip-off, the third accused, Saranabasava (27),  was arrested in Chennai. He has been brought here and police will take him into custody today.” Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara also confirmed the arrest of all three accused in the case.

Karnataka Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi, who is in charge of Koppal, said the incident should never have happened. He added police have been advised to increase security at such places to avert such incidents in the future. On the night of March 6, a group of tourists including two foreign nationals went for stargazing along the banks of the Tungabhadra canal. A motorcycle-borne gang noticed the group and allegedly asked them for directions to the nearest petrol pump. When the group said they were unaware of it, the accused allegedly asked them for Rs 100.

When the tourists refused, the trio pushed the three men in the group, including a US national, into the canal. They allegedly sexually assaulted a 26-year-old Israeli national and 29-year-old homestay operator and fled from the place. While two of the men climbed back to the banks, Bibash, a tourist from Odisha drowned. Police arrested two of the accused soon after the incident.
