The last rites of veteran industrialist Ratan Tata, who died at a Mumbai hospital on Wednesday night, were performed with full state honours at the Worli crematorium in central Mumbai on Thursday evening.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, his cabinet colleague Piyush Goyal, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, his deputy Devendra Fadnavis, Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel and Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal attended the funeral of the business magnate who transformed the Tata Group into a globalised diversified conglomerate.

Tata's family members, including the half-brother Noel Tata, and top executives from the Tata Group like chairman N. Chandrasekaran, were present at the crematorium.

Earlier, Tata's mortal remains, wrapped in the national flag, lay in state at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in south Mumbai where thousands of people, including politicians, actors and sportspersons, paid their final respects. Later, they were taken to the crematorium where Tata was given a ceremonial guard of honour by the Mumbai Police.

The last rites were performed as per the Parsi tradition. After the funeral, there will be three more days of rituals which will be conducted at the late industrialist's bungalow in Colaba, south Mumbai, a priest  present at the crematorium told PTI.

A visionary leader and philanthropist, Tata (86) breathed his last at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital where he had been admitted on Monday following a sudden drop in blood pressure.
