Seven residents of  Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits tested positive for Zika virus on Sunday along with one each from Pune rural and Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) area, local media reports said. The fresh cases took the total number of Zika cases in the Pune district to 48, Maharashtra Health Department reportedly said. 

The samples of the patients were tested at National Institute of Virology (NIV). The fresh cases included a 20 weeks pregnant woman from Shivane, whose samples were sent to NIV on July 22, the Hindustan Times said in a report. Zika virus can cause neurological complications in pregnant women. Congenital microcephaly (a problem with brain development while in mother's womb) is among the risks of the viral infection.

A boy and octogenarian are also among the fresh cases.
