CCTV visuals captured a horrific accident that happened in Maharashtra's Kolhapur on Monday afternoon causing multiple casualties. A speeding Santro car was caught on camera ramming into multiple two-wheelers before ramming into a signal pole.
The CCTV footage, too graphic for public display, showed the motorists being hit from behind at a busy intersection, before crashing onto the pole on the roadside. While some of the victims, who survived the crash managed to get up, the others were not so lucky as they were thrown into the air in the impact of the collision, the heartbreaking video showed.
Among the victims was the driver of the car that caused the tragic incident that shocked Maharashtra. As the postmortem of the victims is taking place, here is what we know about the horrific car accident so far:
When and where: Local media reports said the tragic accident happened at Kolhapur's Cyber Chowk around 2:30 pm on Monday.
The victims: The police have confirmed three deaths following the Kolhapur accident. Two of the victims were minors while the third was the driver of the car -- a septuagenarian.
An eight-month-old infant was confirmed dead following the unfortunate incident. 16-year-old Harshad Patil, who had recently taken his 10th exam, succumbed while undergoing treatment, AajTak said in a report. Vasant Chavan, 72, who drove the car during the accident, was reportedly the third victim.
Cause of the accident: According to AajTak's report, car driver Vasant Chavan was found with a bandage on his head inside the car. The police suspect that he could have felt dizziness while driving and lost control -- leading to the accident. However, the authorities have not confirmed this theory yet.
Treatment: Those who were injured in the incident are being treated at Kolhapur's CPR Hospital, Vasant Hospital and City Hospital. The condition of three people is reportedly critical.The mother of the infant killed in the accident is among the injured motorists.
