Woman killed, 26 rescued as fire engulfs Delhi residential building

Residents tried to jump off the building to escape fire

A middle-aged woman died as fire broke out in a residential building in East Delhi's Shakarpur during the early hours of Tuesday. Fire and rescue services rushed to the spot and rescued 26 persons from the building.

According to officials, fire broke out in the parking lot of the four-storey building and it later spread to other parts of the apartment building. Four cars which were parked here got completely charred, officials said.

A woman died in the fire while 26 people, along with two pets, were rescued by the Delhi Fire Service, the officials said, adding that some people jumped off the windows to save themselves. According to reports, the woman died while trying to escape by jumping off the building.

"We got a fire call at about 1.05 am... We immediately pressed three fire engines to service. Later, five more fire engines were rushed to the spot. The matter was informed to the police immediately," an official of the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) told PTI.

There were close to 60 people in the building and all rescued were rushed to a hospital, officials said. Over 10 persons reportedly suffered minor injuries.
