Two senior faculty members at a private engineering college in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad have been suspended for scolding a student who raised ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogan on the  campus, reports said on Saturday.

The incident took place on Friday evening during a cultural event as part of the induction programme at the ABES Engineering College.

According to reports, a student who was on the stage for a performance, chanted ‘Jai Shri Ram’ which was objected to by two lady professors. The teachers asked the student to leave the stage, saying it was a cultural event and such slogans were not allowed.

After videos of the alleged incident went viral on social media platforms, a few right-wing groups staged protests in front of the college, prompting the management to form a committee to investigate the matter.

Based on the committee’s recommendations, the principal suspended faculty members Mamata Gautam and Shweta Sharma.

“A video came to my notice yesterday after which a probe committee was formed. The committee was asked to submit a report soon. Within 24 hours, the report was submitted, and based on that two faculty members have been suspended with immediate effect for their inappropriate behaviour,” College director Sanjay Kumar Singh said in a video statement.

Singh clarified that college authority will not take any action against the students over the incident.

Meanwhile, a police investigation has also been launched into the incident.
