All India Congress Committee (AICC) expelled Assam Youth Congress president Angkita Dutta from the party for six years citing “anti-party activities” on Saturday. The move comes days after Dutta raised harassment and sexism allegations against IYC national president Srinivas B.V.
"Hon'ble Congress President has expelled Dr Angkita Dutta, President Congress Assam Pradesh Youth Congress, from the primary membership of the party, for six years, for her anti-party activities, with immediate effect," read the statement released by the AICC.
Taking to twitter, Dutta had alleged that IYC president Srinivas B.V. has harassed her and was discriminating on the basis of her gender. "The leadership has played deaf ears despite bring front of them many times," Dutta tweeted.
She had said that despite her complaints, no enquiry committee has been initiated against Srinivas. Dutta claimed that she had informed the matter to Rahul Gandhi as well.
In a series of tweets, she also said that she had proof of his harassment of the last six months.
She filed a complaint at the Dispur police station on Wednesday allleging harassment and torture against Srinivas. He was also accused of threatening her with dire consequences if she kept on complaining against him to senior party leaders.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee chief Bhupen Kumar Borah served a show-cause notice to Dutta on why she had gone public with her allegations without informing the party leadership.
Angkita Dutta had submitted her reply to the show-cause notice for raising allegations of harassment and gender discrimination against the Indian Youth Congress president in the public before informing the party leadership.
Her reply was forwarded to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Friday.
In connection with the complaint she filed, Dutta was called to the CID office here on Friday.
After she raised allegations againt Srinivas had issued a notice to Dutta demanding an apology for her statements against him.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of Dutta's allegations and has written to the police to take necessary action.
