On Tuesday, Delhi Police achieved a rare feat. For the first time, they managed to arrest a gangster from outside the country.   Deepak Boxer, one of the most-wanted gangsters, was arrested in Mexico on Tuesday after he fled the country three months ago on a fake passport.

Boxer was arrested by Mexican law enforcement officials with the aid of Delhi Police’s special cell members. The Delhi Police had been camping in Mexico for the past couple of days to nail Boxer.

Boxer,  a 27-year-old gangster from the Gannaur area of Haryana, shot to popularity in 2016 when he freed gangster Jitender alias Gogi from police custody. Boxer was an active member of the Gogi gang until the latter was killed inside the Rohini courts complex in September 2021. He then took over the gang.

But, it was the murder of a realtor in August 2022 that triggered the police chase. The builder, Amit Gupta, was gunned down on a busy road in Delhi's Civil Lines area. Boxer, who shot him down, put up a Facebook post claiming responsibility for the murder, stating that the motive was not extortion but revenge. Boxer claimed that Gupta was associated with a rival Tillu Tajpuria gang. He said Gupta was the financier of that gang.

Following the murder, Boxer used a fake passport to leave the country. He fled to Mexico on January 29 from Kolkata under the alias Ravi Antil. Boxer carried a reward of ₹3 lakhs on his arrest.

The Delhi Police then contacted Mexican law enforcement authorities and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to track Boxer. "Some weeks ago, we got authentic information that Deepak Boxer had fled India on a fake passport. We had definite clues that he had gone to Mexico and was staying there. His escape from India was facilitated by jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, and Goldy Brar, who is also a fugitive and hiding on foreign soil," a special cell officer told Hindustan Times.

After his presence was confirmed in Mexico, the special cell contacted Interpol and the Mexican law enforcement agencies. Following this, a two-member team of the special cell left for Mexico. Boxer’s location was tracked, and his hideout identified. After this, the local agencies arrested him.

The Delhi Police now have to convince the Mexican authorities and court to hand over Boxer’s custody. A team of Special Cell officials have left for Mexico to work through the legal hurdles for his extradition.
