Kerala Police on Monday arrested a 55-year-old man for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman patient at Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode. The accused has been identified as Saseendran, a Grade II attendant.

The woman, who had undergone a surgery at the hospital, claimed in her complaint that she was sexually assaulted by the accused at the post operative facility on Saturday.

"The woman was in a semi-conscious state. Around that time, another patient was in critical condition and all the staff had moved to attend that patient. The woman was shifted from the operation theatre to the Surgical ICU by this attendant. She knew about the assault but was not able to react in a semi-conscious manner," the complaint said.

She narrated her ordeal to her husband once she regained consciousness, after which the family approached the Medical College Police.

Police said Saseendran has been charged under various sections of the IPC, including 376 (Rape) and 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty). He has also been suspended from the service.

State Health Minister Veena George had ordered an inquiry and sought a report from the Director of Medical Education.
