Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Mulayam Singh Yadav passed away on Monday morning after a prolonged illness. He was 82.

Prime Minister Modi paid tributes to the veteran politician and called him a “key soldier for democracy during the Emergency'. “Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji distinguished himself in UP and national politics. He was a key soldier for democracy during the Emergency. As Defence Minister, he worked for a stronger India. His Parliamentary interventions were insightful and emphasised on furthering national interest,” the PM wrote on Twitter. He also shared multiple photographs from his meetings with Mulayam.

Mulayam was a grounded leader who served people diligently and devoted his life towards popularising the ideals of Loknayak JP and Dr Lohia, Modi said in another tweet.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced three-day state mourning and said the last rites of Mulayam Singh will be performed with full state honours.

President Draupadi Murmu, in her tribute, said Mulayam Singh came from an ordinary background but his achievements were extraordinary. 'Dharti Putra' Mulayam's demise is an irreparable loss to the country, she said.
