The under-construction airport at Shivamogga in Karnataka would be named after former chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa, the state government announced on Wednesday. Chief Mnister Basavaraj Bommai said the state cabinet has already taken a decision in this regard and the proposal would be sent to Union Civil Aviation Ministry.

"The airport would be ready for inauguration in December. Measures would be taken to complete all the work before that to dedicate the airport to the people,” Bommai told media after inspecting the progress of the work, reported ANI.

The project has been taken up under the Udaan scheme. Bommai said modern ATC equipment would be installed at the airport which will also have night landing facilities.

“The airport would have the longest runway of 3,299 metres after the Bengaluru airport. It would be an airport or international standards where airbus could land," the chief minister said, adding that the airport would give a big boost for education, health services and industrialisation of Shivamogga.

Bommai said Yediyurappa, a BJP veteran, had played a major role in bringing the airport for Shivamogga during his tenure as the chief minister.

According to a report in The Hindu, there has been demand from several seers and people of Shivamogga to name the airport after Yediyurappa. It said K.S. Eshwarappa was one among those who suggested Yediyurappa’s name.
