New worry for Congress in Gujarat? Ahmed Patel's son is 'tired of waiting'

Faisal tweets he is keeping options open

Even as the Congress battles a leadership crisis and tries to gear up for assembly elections in Gujarat later this year, a social media post on Tuesday has raised many eyebrows.

The tweet comes from Faisal Patel, son of Ahmed Patel, former Congress leader and political adviser to Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Ahmed Patel passed away on November 20, 2020, following post-Covid complications.

An alumnus of Harvard Business School, 41-year-old Faisal tweeted, “Tired of waiting around. No encouragement from the top brass. Keeping my options open.”

Following his tweet, Faisal was trolled as well. Many reminded him how loyal his father Ahmed Patel was to the Congress and that the son has given up too soon in a long battle.

One person reminded him that he had once declared that he would not join active politics. Another person replied to Faisal saying that he (Faisal) admires “Sanghi Kejriwal” and that he had already made his intentions clear when he met AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal last year.

He had a piece of advice from image guru Dilip Cherian as well. Cherian tweeted in a reply, “Choose wisely…take counsel of your well wishers, please”.

A senior Congress leader in Gujarat told THE WEEK that Faisal does not hold any post in the Congress and he is just the son of Ahmed Patel.

He is associated with HMP Foundation, set up by his father and him. The foundation provides free health care and education to the needy in and around Bharuch district of Gujarat.

Recent turncoat from Congress Jayrajsinh Parmar did not lose an opportunity to be sarcastic. Apparently referring to what Rahul Gandhi had said during his last visit to Gujarat, Parmar said “It does not make a difference if five or twenty-five people go away, but does it also include Faisal Ahmed Patel?”

Speculations are rife over what role Faisal would have in the Gujarat polls.

Faisal did not respond to calls or messages.
