Almost half of Yogi's new ministers have criminal cases against them

The average assets of the newly sworn in ministers in Uttar Pradesh stand at Rs 9 crore, while 49 per cent of those sworn in on Friday have criminal cases against their names.

As per an analysis of candidate affidavits by the Association for Democratic Reforms, 20 ministers have criminal cases of a serious nature listed against their names, while 39 ministers are crorepatis.

Those with serious criminal cases include Nand Gopal Gupta Nandi, who was also a minister in the previous government. He is followed by Daya Shankar Singh who is the husband of minister for women empowerment in the previous state government, Swati Singh.

Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya, who lost the assembly election but is an MLC, too has a number of cases against him. These include charges for criminal intimidation, attempt to murder, culpable homicide and attempt to unduly influence an election.

Of the 52 ministers (plus Adityanath), six are not members of either Houses and hence were not part of the analysis. The details of two ministers - Sanjay Nishad and Jitin Prasada, both members of the Legislative Council, were not available for analysis. Thus, the affidavits of 45 out of 53 were analysed.

The minister with the highest declared total assets is Mayankeshwar Sharan Singh from Tiloi constituency - Rs 58.07 crore. He has listed agriculture as his profession. The one with lowest assets is Dharamveer Singh (MLC) - Rs 42.91 lakh. Singh has listed his profession as social worker.

While 27 ministers have declared liabilities, the one with the highest figure is Rakesh Sachan of Bhognipur constituency, with Rs 8.17 crore of liabilities.

The most commonly declared education qualification is graduate and above, while 9 ministers have studied up to class 8-10.

Those between the ages of 51 and 70 make up 56 per cent of the ministry.

CM Adityanath, who won his first ever assembly election from Gorakhpur Urban, has assets worth Rs 1.5 crore and an income of Rs 13 lakh. He has no criminal cases to his name. He holds a graduate degree in science from the HN Bahuguna University (Uttarakhand).
