The Congress on Saturday ruled out reports that party president Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul Gandhi and daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra would offer resignations in the wake of its poor show in the recently concluded Assembly elections.

Quoting sources, a TV channel had claimed that the three top leaders from the Gandhi family would offer to resign at the Congress Working Committee meeting scheduled to be held on Sunday evening.

The party, however, termed the report “completely unfair, mischievous and incorrect”.

“The news story of alleged resignations being carried on NDTV based on unnamed sources is completely unfair, mischievous and incorrect,” Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala tweeted.

“It is unfair for a TV channel to carry such unsubstantiated propaganda stories emanating from imaginary sources at the instance of ruling BJP,” he said.

The Congress's top decision making body will meet on Sunday to discuss the outcome of the assembly elections in five states where the party received a drubbing. Sonia Gandhi will chair the meeting at its headquarters in Delhi at 4 pm.

The Congress lost Punjab to the AAP and could not win any of the four other states—Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur.

The Sunday meeting is likely to see some fireworks as the G-23 leaders had suggested corrective measures after the previous round of assembly polls, when the party lost Puducherry and failed to make a mark in Kerala, Assam and West Bengal, but there had been little movement on that front.

The leaders of G-23, who have been demanding an organisational overhaul, had met Friday evening at the residence of senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad to evolve their strategy ahead of the crucial CWC meeting.

In the spotlight is the role of the Gandhi siblings Rahul and Priyanka who had led the party from the front in the just concluded polls.
