BJP MP Subramanian Swamy has criticised the Russian invasion of Ukraine and India's guarded stance on the issue.

In a tweet on Thursday, Swamy compared the Russian invasion to Nazi Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union in the Second World War. He wrote “Russia's Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine is much like Adolf Hitler's invasion of Russia in World War II. It will be like Nazis getting stuck in St Peterburg and then downhill, and thus signal a further collapse of Russia post 1991. Siberia will be gobbled up by China…”

He tweeted on Thursday India's silence on the invasion of Ukraine showed “the lack of morality in our ancient cultural land's of current leadership.”

Swamy criticised purported differences between the press statements issued by India and Russia on the conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Narendra Modi and Putin on Thursday night. While the Indian statement referred to the issue of dialogue coming up in the conversation, the Russian statement did not. Swamy alleged the Modi government had misled the country in a manner similar to its handling of the standoff with China in Ladakh. He tweeted on Friday “How long will the Indian people be fooled by spin and lies of Modi govt? Just like koi aaya nahin while China has grabbed 40, 000 sq kms of Indian territory.”

Swamy alleged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress President Sonia Gandhi (whom he refers to as 'TDK' on Twitter) were “on the same page” on the Ukraine issue. He tweeted “Presently Modi and TDK are on the same page on invasion by Russians of Ukraine. Vladimir is the place where TDK’s father was in jail as a captured Nazi soldier in WW II. In 2006 Vladimir Putin personally escorted TDK to Vladimir jail to show where her father was jailed.”

Sonia Gandhi's father was taken prisoner during the Second World War by the Soviet Union.

Swamy has previously referred to the alleged ties between Sonia Gandhi and Putin, including claiming Sonia Gandhi was a KGB spy, like Putin.

Swamy, in an apparently sarcastic tone, tweeted people should appeal to Sonia to reach out to Putin. He wrote “Russian fans should urge TDK [alumnus of the same school as Putin], to call Putin and ask him not to bully a defenceless Ukraine. Otherwise when senior Xi, Pak Army [Imran won't be around soon], and junior Putin collaborate to dismember Kashmir as was Crimea, India will suffer.”
