Former Goa chief minister late Manohar Parrikar’s son Utpal Parrikar filed nomination for contesting the Assembly polls as an independent candidate from Panaji seat, on Thursday. Utpal, who had quit the BJP last week after being denied ticket by the party, said he wanted to follow his father’s work.

Earlier, Utpal offered prayers at Mahalaxmi temple in Panaji before filing his nomination. "I came here to seek God's blessings but I hope and I am confident that the people of Panaji will bless me,” he told news agency ANI.

Exuding confidence of winning the election, Utpal said he would give his “200 per cent” effort for the people of Panaji.

Goa goes to polls on February 14 and the counting of votes will take place on March 10.

The BJP has fielded incumbent MLA Atanasio Monserrate from the Panaji seat which Manohar Parrikar had represented for a long time.
