UP polls: Priyanka Gandhi names Unnao rape victim's mother as Congress candidate

40 per cent of the first list of 125 candidates are women

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, on Thursday, announced the first list of candidates for Uttar Pradesh polls. The party has nominated Asha Singh, mother of the Unnao rape victim, as a candidate."Out of the total 125 candidates, 40 per cent are women and 40 per cent are youth. With this historic initiative, we hope to bring in a new kind of politics in the state," Priyanka said.

"Our list sends a new message that if you have been a victim of harassment and torture, the Congress will support you," she added. The other candidates include Asha worker Poonam Pandey who led an agitation for a raise in honorarium, Priyanka said.

In October, Priyanka had announced the party slogan ‘Ladki Hoon Lad Sakti Hoon’ (I am a girl I can fight).

The UP elections will be held in seven phases from February 10 to March 7.
