The killing of a 55-year-old man at a wedding in Mandsaur district in Madhya Pradesh on Sunday has triggered shock. Devilal Meena, a former sarpanch of Jamonia village, died after being shot as violence erupted at the marriage function over airing of a discourse of jailed godman Rampal.

Devilal Meena died in a hospital in Rajasthan's Kota district.

The Madhya Pradesh Police said the man who shot Devilal Meena was one Shailendra Meena. The police said on Monday a case was registered against 15 people and three were arrested, but Shailendra was still absconding.

Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijaya Singh used the incident to target the BJP government in the state. Digvijaya blamed the incident on the rightwing group Bajrang Dal. He tweeted, “In Bhainsoda village of Mandsaur district, another Bajrang Dal leader openly killed… in a marriage ceremony. This is another proof how criminals are involved in criminal activities under the patronage of BJP leaders. The culprit is still absconding.” Interestingly, some media reports said Devilal Meena had been associated with the BJP.

NDTV reported the people who attacked the wedding shouted 'Jai Shri Ram'. “Rampal's followers say he follows a different wedding ceremony, popularly known as Ramaini, which takes only 17 minutes. The attackers have alleged that such a marriage is against the Hindu religion,” NDTV reported.
