The Supreme Court on Wednesday turned down a plea from the ministry of defence to allow women to take the examination to the National Defence Academy from next year.

The government had stated infrastructural and curriculum changes were needed to prepare for allowing women to take the NDA examination. It sought time till May 2022 to allow women to take the NDA examination.

The Supreme Court bench, led by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and comprising Justice B.R. Gavai, observed admission of women could not be postponed. The bench noted it could not postpone absorption of women into the NDA by a year as writing the NDA examination in 2022 meant getting admission only in 2023.

"If they appear in exams in May 2022, then the intake will take place in June 2023. We cannot delay things by a year. We gave hope to the girls. We cannot deny them that hope now," the Supreme Court bench was quoted as saying by NDTV.

The bench stated the armed forces were well-trained for emergencies and could come up with a "faster solution" to allow for entry of women into the NDA.

The bench directed the ministry of defence to collaborate with the UPSC for new parameters to issue a notification allowing women to appear for the NDA examination in November in compliance with its order, Live Law reported. The NDA examination will be held on November 14 this year.

The bench adjourned hearing of the matter to the third week of January.

The bench was hearing a plea seeking directions to allow women candidates to appear for the NDA examination and Naval Academy examination.
