Veteran Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath met party president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday, once again setting off speculations over organisational changes in the Congress at central as well as state level.

However, since the meeting came just a day ahead of the scheduled meeting of Sonia Gandhi with other prominent opposition leaders on August 20, there were also hints that the strategy and agenda of the meeting might have been discussed during the meeting.

The meeting between Nath and Sonia Gandhi lasted for about an hour. Narendra Saluja, media coordinator of Kamal Nath, said several political issues were discussed during the meeting, and Nath also apprised Gandhi of the activities of the MP Congress Committee.

Kamal Nath had rubbished speculations of him being made the interim Congress chief, after he met Gandhi in July. He had said he kept meeting Sonia Gandhi often to discuss issues related with the party.

Sources, however, say that organisational restructuring is imperative in Congress at central level and though Sonia Gandhi might continue to be interim chief till at least end of this year, some coordinating/advisory role might be given to senior leaders, including Nath.

Besides, organisational changes are awaited in the MP Congress Committee for some time now, though there seems to be no urgency on that ground as yet.

Sonia Gandhi’s meeting with opposition leaders may have well been a dominating agenda during the meeting with Nath on Thursday as the MP Congress leader is known to have good personal equations with several of the key opposition leaders like Mamata Banerjee and Sharad Pawar, sources added.
