A professor in Uttar Pradesh, who had allegedly made derogatory remarks against Union Minister Smriti Irani, was sent to jail after he surrendered himself before the magistrate at a local court in Firozabad.

Professor Shaharyar Ali, head of the History department at SRK college in Firozabad, allegedly made the obscene remarks on Facebook against the women and child development minister in March. Following this, the college had served him with a suspension notice.

Firozabad police filed a case against Ali and his anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the Allahabad High Court in May. The high court rejected Ali’s claim that his account had been hacked, saying there was no material record to prove it.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court also refused to grant him protection from arrest.

On Tuesday, the professor surrendered to Additional Sessions Judge Anurag Kumar and filed an interim bail application. The judge, however, rejected it and sent him to jail.
